VFFF recognises the important role philanthropy can play in supporting and testing new ideas. That’s why for the past six months VFFF has been collaborating with WWF-Australia to identify organisations in their ecosystem with new ideas to support young people in regional communities to care for the environment.

As the first step in this project, WWF-Australia undertook a focused discovery process resulting in the identification of fourteen new ideas, all with the objective of supporting young people to develop their skills, knowledge and networks in order to convert their concern for the environment into practical action. Five of these ideas were then selected to work with industry experts sourced by WWF-Australia to further develop their ideas and from these five, two projects were selected to receive further support. This support includes $100,000 of funding, access to a specialist incubator to further enhance their thinking, plus mentoring from members of the WWF-Australia team.

Congratulations to:

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in Marine Science (ATSIMS), facilitated by James Cook University in Townsville. This project will aim to strengthen alumni engagement among its upcoming First Nations Year 10 student cohort. Their efforts will focus on providing direct connections with First Nations role models in marine science and management fields. They will also support practical work placements and skill development opportunities within the industry. These initiatives are designed to inspire and support these young individuals in their journey towards marine science and management careers.

  • Jagun Alliance, based in the Northern Rivers of NSW. This project will develop their work in empowering young mob through mentoring and active involvement in cultural land management practices, with a particular focus on the Boorabee (Koala) Pathway Project. From this, program participants will then be supported to pursue training or employment opportunities related to connecting and caring for Country.

VFFF looks forward to watching these ideas take shape in the year ahead. Who knows what they may grow in to?
