Backing the Future: Callum Champagne
“The Backing the Future grant program gave me the foundation from which to make Grow the Future happen. This grant program is very unique in that I felt it really prioritised the impact of the vision that I had, and gave me the support and flexibility to realise that vision" - Callum Champagne
Callum Champagne received a 2022 NSW Backing the Future grant for Grow the Future – a social enterprise offering young people in the Bega Valley Shire supported work experience and regenerative skills training. This proposal was approved under VFFF’s Caring for the Environment focus area.
Callum grew up in the Bega Valley Shire before relocating to Wollongong. In October 2021, Callum moved back to the Bega region to deliver the YouthSpeak project for Bega Valley Shire Council. This project enabled him to consult widely with young people and the local community to better understand the needs and priorities of Bega Valley youth. This work shaped his vision for a regenerative farm that produces local food for the community, while providing training and employment for young people.
Callum’s Backing the Future grant will fund equipment, materials and consultancy support to give Grow the Future the foundations for success. Callum has had strong backing from young people and the local community in the development of Grow the Future. There is also significant interest from young people in participating in the Grow the Future training program.
Grow the Future launched in June 2023. The training program will commence on Wednesday 2 August 2023.
