Youth Advisory Group - In conversation with Kieran Lonergan
As part of our regular Youth Advisory Group Q&A series, we are excited to introduce you to Kieran Lonergan.
Tell us a bit about you! Where are you from, what do you do, and what are some of your passions/interests?
Hi, I’m Kieran from Hobart, Tasmania. My life is full and fast-paced, but I’ll keep it brief.
Professionally, I work as a Youth Worker at a crisis accommodation shelter for young people aged 12-15. In the new year, I’ll be transitioning into a new role as a Reconnect Worker, where I’ll focus on early intervention to support young people in areas such as education, family/home life, homelessness, and relationships with peers.
Beyond my professional life, I’m deeply involved in Tasmania's local music scene. I write hip-hop music as a form of therapy and creative expression, and I also run local music events, design clothing through my own brand, and host a podcast.
Though I juggle many different roles, they all share a common thread: connection. Whether it's through music, my work, or community projects, building meaningful connections is the core value that drives everything I do.
What is your connection to rural and regional Australia?
I feel a strong connection to rural and regional Australia through my ongoing education and deepening relationship with my home Country, Tebrakunna, located in the far northeast of Tasmania. My connection to Country has provided me with a profound sense of belonging and understanding, one that continues to grow as I learn more about its cultural roots.
In addition, having lived in Tasmania for 16 years and experienced life in every major city and town across the state, I’ve gained a deep and meaningful understanding of my community and its diverse dynamics.
What is one issue facing young people that you would like to highlight to our readers?
This is a challenging question, but the first issue that comes to mind is the lack of a meaningful youth voice in the changes and support that shape a young person’s life. From my experience working with young people, many feel they have little say or control over their own futures. Often, they are told what to do without being given the chance to understand why or to express their own perspective.
I believe that when we focus on giving young people a platform to voice their needs, desires, and goals, we empower them to become passionate, expressive, and capable leaders who can carve their own paths. Innovation, strength in beliefs, and the ability to shape their own futures are essential. A strong, active youth voice is key to fostering the next generation of leaders and game-changers.
You have been a member of our Youth Advisory Group for six months now. What has been the highlight of the process so far?
My time with the YAG has been filled with many highlights, but two stand out. The first is the opportunity to collaborate with a group of incredibly talented individuals, each bringing a unique perspective and background. This experience has deepened my understanding of teamwork and honed my skills in collaborative work.
The second highlight has been witnessing the incredible initiatives emerging from rural and regional communities. The creativity and passion of the people I’ve encountered have filled me with hope and peace, reminding me that despite the chaos life can throw our way, there are always people working tirelessly to create support systems and opportunities for young people. The best part is being able to see these opportunities come to life through the Backing the Future Grants.
